Just a little on Judaism

Today I'm posting late cos I just handed in my IA report about 2 hours ago. That really took a load off my mind. Although, I think I over-typed my report as it totalled about 120 pages, with appendices. The raw content itself was a very nice round number of 80 pages. Basically, I typed too much, but I was too lazy to summarise it further as I had already cut nearly 30 pages from it. Well, I just hope that my IA prof will read it...

Anyway, today's Tuesday again. So I will go into another religion - Judaism. This will also be the last religion I'll be looking into cos I can't think of any more religions to look into. But if you have one that you'd like me to post about, just leave me a comment ok? As usual, I'll start with a disclaimer that I'm typing this post based only on what little I understand about Judaism. So if I make any mistakes, please correct me. Thanks.

On to Judaism. Judaism is the religion and culture of the Jewish people and one of the first recorded monotheistic faiths. It forms the historical foundation of religions like Chirstainity and Islam, which are currently the major shaping forces in the world. It is also one of the oldest religions today - over 4000 years old.

The Torah is part of the Hebrew Bible and it specifies a number of laws that are to be followed by the Jews and the source of all the basic Biblical commandments. It is believed that each person is created in the image of the one God and therefore all people are created equal. Judaism also believes that people have freewill and are responsible for the choices they make.

The Jews believe that the land of Israel is part of the covenant made between God and the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. They also believe that the Messiah will be a person (not a god), from the family of King David, who will lead the world to unity and peace. Most importantly, Jews do not believe that Jesus was the Messiah.

Now who exactly is a Jew? Unlike other religions, you can't exactly become a Jew as easily as just saying that you wish to believe in Judaism. In fact, the question of what exactly being a Jew entails is still under serious debate. But, basically to become a Jew, you must first accept the teachings of the Torah. Next you must be immersed in the ritual bath, and finally (for men only) you must be circumcised. But if you are born of a Jewish mother, you can skip all that as you are automatically a Jew.

As for Jewish holidays, the holiest day of the Jewish year is Yom Kippur, literally "Day of Atonement". This falls on different days of the Gregorian calendar each year but generally occurs within the September to October months. In addition there are a number of other holidays like Sukkot, Israel's Independence day and Israels' Memorial day.

Well, that's all I have on Judaism. Personally, I think that for such an old religion, Judaism is still rather traditional, and doesn't seem to have changed much. Also, it appears to be one of the more restrictive religions as well. Anyway if you want to know more you can click here, here or here.
