Flower Power

Today's going to be a busy day for me. First, I have to try to finish up my project. Then, I have to prepare a presentation for tomorrow's project competition, and lastly, I'll have to plan my timetable, with multiple backups just in case the worst happens. I guess I'll probably try to apply from my office tomorrow, then call someone in who's going down to NTU to help me apply if the proxy server causes any problems. I think that's my best option now, baring any miracles like the judges suddenly deciding to change the date/time of the competition...*starts praying*

Anyway, I'm sure all of us could do with a little perk me up and a little happy stuff once in a while. So, what should you give someone to make him or her happy? Well, apparently flowers do a good job, at least statistically, and assume of course that smiling implies that you are happy.

Studies done by scientists from the Rutgers University have found that flowers make people happier. Actually the study was testing out a theory that more flowers managed to survive on Earth compared to other plant species because humans are so attached to them, but the happiness factor was also part of this.

The scientists basically did 3 studies. In the first, they gave flowers to 147 women and all of them smiled. When they tried the same with candles, 23% didn't smile, and when the gift was fruits, 10% didn't smile.

The second study consisted of both men and women in an elevator totalling 122. These men and women were given either flowers, a pen, or nothing. The result was, "those who got flowers smiled more, talked more, and -- here it gets interesting -- stood closer together."

The final study tested this theory on older people. 113 men and women from a retirement home were sent flowers and a notebook. All of them got at least 1 bouquet, while some got another bouquet when others received their first. And of course the result was, the earlier and more flowers a person got, the happier he or she was.

Well, it seems that flowers do make the best gifts. So next time you can't think of a gift for anyone, just give them flowers. I think this is especially true for girls. As for the guys, I don't think those I know would really like getting a bouquet of flowers as a present (correct me if I'm wrong). Maybe that's the difference between Asian and Western cultures? Also please don't give me flowers, I don't really like them, and neither would I like to carry them around... ;)

Flowers make people happy. And while that might seem obvious, there hasn't been much research to prove the point until now.

A trio of new studies by Rutgers University scientists supports the notion pretty strongly, and the experts go on to speculate that flowers have flourished on this planet, with their beauty evolving in recent millennia, partly because humans are so attached to them.
