Bayes' Theorem used to Prove God Exists...

As a start, I shall announce that this post is not a religious one, so please read it with a light heart. It is not a post to promote or discredit any religion. It's just a post about some risk assessor in Ohio, who decided to "prove" the existence of God or a Supreme Being, using probability - Bayes's Theory to be exact. And the result? He found that there's a 67% chance that God exists.

How'd he get that figure? Well, he started with a 50-50 chance and then factored in evidence for and against the notion of an omnipotent power (such as natural good and evil). From there, its just a simple case of mathematics. However, the evidence used wasn't exactly very "solid" or scientific, but hey, we aren't discussing something exactly scientific here either.

I'm sure that most of us believe in (a form of) God, so it wouldn't really be necessary to do this. But for those of you who aren't really convinced, and are mathematically inclined, you might want to try finding the odds out yourself. It just goes to show that our secondary school mathematics isn't just for handling the GCE O-Levels.

Here's some good news for the supreme being - a scientist has calculated that there is a 67 percent chance that God exists.

I bet God's grateful for that. In fact, a spokesman for God confirmed that He was gratified that he can continue to call himself "I Am," as he says in the Old Testament of the Bible - although if the scientist is correct, God may have to call himself "I Probably Am."

Maybe not.

The God odds come from a book by Dr. Stephen Unwin, a risk assessor in Ohio who graduated from Manchester University in England. He used a 200-year-old formula to calculate the possibility - now a probability - of a supreme being. The formula, called "Bayes' Theory," is usually used to calculate the likelihood of events such as nuclear power failure by balancing various factors that could affect a situation.

Haha. That's why I said that the maths is for those who don't believe. I guess the guy just did it out of curiosity, and also to prove to those Atheists, that God, most probably, exists... ;)

Hi smiles, sorry din notice your comment till now. Hee...

Hmm... my religion? Technically, I am a free-thinker, yet I do pray to Buddha so I guess I am a Buddhist, but I still eat beef, so erm... I guess I am somewhat of a Taoist, but I dun really pray to the Taoist gods. Hmm...

So I don't really know what religion I fall under, but I guess I should be more towards Buddhism but maybe a "casual" Buddhist?? Haha.
