In Memory of our Pet Hamster

A couple of years back, I bought a couple of hamsters as pets for my girlfriend. And although they mostly stayed with my girlfriend, there were times when they stayed with me in my hostel room and accompanied me through the tough days at school.

Well, all good things must come to an end. Last night, my girlfriend told me that the female hamster had passed away, when exactly, we do not know. I'm not very good with writing such things, but I decided to dedicate this post to the memory of that cute little hamster. I hope that she's somewhere in Hamster Heaven now, enjoying herself. And I hope her (many) children are living happy lives with the owners we found them.

I couldn't really find the words to comfort my girlfriend and neither can I find the words to describe the sense of loss I felt. I'm sure those who have lost a pet before will understand what I mean. And, although I wouldn't equate it with the loss of a loved one, I think the feeling is about the same, but to a (much) lesser degree. So I found this poem online, that I think can better express the feeling of this loss for us...

If tears could build a stairway
And memories were a lane
We would walk right up to heaven
And bring you back again.
No farewell words were spoken
No time to say goodbye
You were gone before we knew it
And only God knows why.
